FAQ - 💬

❓ Is the little leaf linden a good tree?

👉 Many consider it to be the best of all the Lindens. It has been widely planted in the United States as an ornamental shade tree. It has a formal appearance, pyramidal to an oval shape, and offers dense shade. The tree has often been planted inappropriately as a street tree.

❓ Are Tilia and linden the same?

👉 Tilia is a genus of about 30 species of trees or bushes, native throughout most of the temperate Northern Hemisphere. The tree is known as linden for the European species, and basswood for North American species.

❓ Is a linden tree good for a backyard?

👉 If you have a large landscape with plenty of room for a medium-to-large tree to spread its branches, consider growing a linden tree. These handsome trees have a loose canopy that produces dappled shade on the ground below, allowing in just enough sunlight for shade grasses and flowers to grow beneath the tree.

❓ Is a linden tree good for a front yard?

👉 A great "front yard" tree, this selection is broadly pyramidal when young and nicely rounded with age. Its dense foliage offers excellent shade and the leaves will turn golden yellow in fall.

❓ Do linden trees have invasive roots?

👉 Additional Concerns. Although leaf and seed litter from American linden does not pose a significant problem, the tree's large spreading root system can threaten nearby structures, drainage systems and other plants.

❓ How messy is a linden tree?

👉 Little-leaf linden is prized for its shade and its fragrant flowers. However, the bracts that bear the flowers and fruit are considered by some to be very messy and difficult to deal with if they drop in a shrubbery or flowerbed.

❓ Why are linden trees so messy?

👉 Linden trees are so messy because of aphids! Linden flowers secrete a substance that attracts aphids, who then excrete a honeydew, leaving things covered and messy. There are a few trees you can grow in place of linden trees, such as Allegheny serviceberry, dogwood, river birch, magnolia, or redbud.

❓ Are linden trees invasive?

👉 The littleleaf linden is native to Europe, but is non-invasive in Michigan. It has small, heart-shaped leaves with uneven leaf bases. Fall leaf color is typically a pale yellow or yellow-brown.

❓ What kills linden trees?

👉 If you have a sick linden tree, your tree might have verticillium wilt, which is one of the most common linden tree diseases. This is also a fungal disease that starts in the soil. It enters the tree through root wounds. The fungus enters the tree's xylem, infects the branches, and spreads to the leaves.

❓ Do linden trees smell?

👉 Also known as basswood or Tilia americana, the linden tree blooms for about two weeks at the beginning of summer, filling the air with a sweet scent that attracts picnickers and buzzing bees alike.

❓ Do linden trees have aggressive roots?

👉 Although leaf and seed litter from American linden does not pose a significant problem, the tree's large spreading root system can threaten nearby structures, drainage systems and other plants.

❓ What is Tilia cordata?

👉 Tilia cordata ( small-leaved lime, occasionally littleleaf linden or small-leaved linden) is a species of Tilia native to much of Europe. It is found from Britain through mainland Europe to the Caucasus and western Asia.

❓ What is littleleaf linden?

👉 The littleleaf linden is a native of Europe to Western Siberia and Iran. The tree dates back to 760 AD. The genus name tilia is Latin for Linden and Lime Tree. It is derived from the Greek word ptelea meaning "Elm tree" or tillai meaning "Black Poplar." The translation means "broad" as in "broad-leaved."

❓ What is the difference between Linden and Tilia americana?

👉 A famous example is Unter den Linden in Berlin. It is also widely cultivated in North America as a substitute for the native Tilia americana (American linden or basswood) which has a larger leaf, coarser in texture; there it has been renamed "Little-leaf Linden".

❓ What is the scientific name for linden tree?

👉 Tilia cordata, the small-leaved lime or small-leaved linden, is a species of tree in the family Malvaceae, native to much of Europe. Other common names include little-leaf or littleleaf linden, small-leaved linden, or traditionally in South East England, pry or pry tree.
