Sassafras ist schwierig zu transplantieren und wächst von 30 bis 60 Fuß hoch mit einer Verbreitung von 25 bis 40 Fuß. Bei einer ungestörten Fläche bildet der Baum Dickichte. Es gibt drei verschiedene Blattformen an einem Baum und die Zweige und Wurzeln sind aromatisch, wenn sie gequetscht werden. Sassafras wächst am besten an einem sonnigen, gut durchlässigen Boden. Die Herbstfarbe variiert mit der jeweiligen Pflanze, ist jedoch im Allgemeinen gelb, rot oder eine Kombination. Die Früchte sind purpurn und tragen leuchtend rote Stiele. Sassafras hat ziemlich sprödes Holz.
