Schwarzwurzel wird wegen seiner essbaren Wurzeln angebaut. Der Samen wird Anfang April 1/2 Zoll tief eingepflanzt. Die Pflanzen haben einen Abstand von 3 bis 4 Zoll in Reihen von 18 bis 24 Zoll. Die Ausdünnung erfolgt, wenn die Pflanzen einen Zoll groß sind.

Die Schwarzwurzel ist im Spätherbst oder frühen Winter reif, nachdem die Pflanzen mattiert wurden. Sie können jederzeit verwendet werden, wenn die Wurzeln groß genug sind, aber die Qualität wird durch Kälte verbessert.
