Ein allgemeines Problem, das beim Wachstum von Forsythienbüschen auftritt, tritt auf, wenn das gesamte Blühen des Busches an seiner Basis auftritt. Dieser Schaden ist ein Ergebnis der Wintertemperaturen - weil Blütenknospen der meisten Forsythien nicht sehr winterhart sind, werden sie oft durch niedrige Wintertemperaturen (-15° F) getötet. Blütenknospen an der Basis des Strauchs sind oft durch Schnee geschützt und vermeiden Schäden.
Ein Mittel kann die Auswahl von robusteren Sorten sein, wie zum Beispiel: Forsythia Intermedia 'Karl Sax', Forsythia Ovata 'Meadowlark', 'Northern Gold', 'Northern Sun', 'Sunrise', 'Ottawa', 'Tetra-Gold', und Forsythia Mandschurica "Vermont Sun".
