FAQ - 💬

❓ Can I tile directly over plywood?

👉 Tile can be laid on plywood. But do not install tile directly on the plywood subfloor itself. Use an intervening layer of a sheet of thinner plywood.

❓ Can you put tile over particle board?

👉 The manufacturers of particleboard flooring do not recommend tiling directly onto their products. These flooring products are coated with a protective coating to prevent moisture ingress. These coatings can interfere with bonding to the substrate. They can also contain waxes, which can also interfere with adhesion.

❓ Can tile be laid directly on subfloor?

👉 While you can lay tile directly over a concrete slab using thin-set adhesive, don't make the mistake of applying tile directly to a plywood subfloor. No matter how firm the subfloor; the plywood will expand and contract at a different rate as the tile, causing cracks to develop in the grout lines or tiles over time.

❓ How thick should plywood be under tile?

👉 The subfloor under the tile should be at least 1 1/8″ thick, with a minimum of 5/8″ thick exterior grade plywood topped by 1/2″ cement backer board.

👉 STEP-BY-STEP FLOOR TILE INSTALLATION. 1 STEP 1: SURFACE PREPARATION. Tile may be installed over most structurally sound substrates, if they are clean, smooth, dry and free of wax, soap scum ... 2 STEP 2: LAYOUT. 3 STEP 3: APPLYING ADHESIVE. 4 STEP 4: CUTTING TILE. 5 STEP 5: SETTING TILE. ❓ How do you tile a room like an expert?

👉 Tiling Like an Expert Lay down tile cement or thinset mortar where your first section of tile will be. Start laying the floor tiles in the middle of the room, lining them up with your chalk lines. Put a grout spacer at each corner of your tiles. Continue laying all but the tiles on the outer edges of your room.

❓ How do you install thinset tile on a wall?

👉 Install tile along your reference line, placing spacers between each tile. Every couple of tile, pull one up to make sure there's full contact with the thinset. If there's not, back-butter the tile — apply mortar to the back of the tile — to get more coverage. Use a wet sponge to wipe off any thinset on the tile surface.

❓ How do you tile between casings?

👉 Simply place a tile next to each casing, add 1/8 in. for the adhesive thickness (use 1/8-in.-thick cardboard as a guide), mark the casings and saw at the mark. Sliding the tiles under the casings eliminates the need for grout and hides the cut edges (Photo 2).
