FAQ - 💬

❓ What causes Diplodia tip blight?

👉 Diplodia tip blight is caused by the fungal pathogen Diplodia pinea (also known as Sphaeropsis sapinea). Spores of the fungus develop in the black pycnidia located at the base of infected needles and other affected plant parts from spring through fall.

❓ How do you treat blight tips?

👉 Diplodia tip blight does respond to fungicide treatments, which should start at bud break in the spring for effective control. If these treatments aren't used, then cones should also be removed during pruning because they hold many fungal spores.

❓ What pathogen causes Diplodia blight?

👉 The opportunistic pathogen Sphaeropsis sapinea (≡Diplodia sapinea) is one of the most severe pathogens in Scots pine, causing the disease Diplodia tip blight on coniferous tree species.

❓ How do you stop Diplodia?

👉 Fungicides can be used to protect young shoots, needles and cones from becoming infected but they won't prevent branch cankers on stressed trees. To prevent shoot blight: Apply a fungicide labeled for use on pine trees just before bud break.

❓ What causes Diplodia ear rot?

👉 Diplodia ear rot is caused by the fungus Stenocarpella maydis and S. macrospora and has become a common (and troublesome) disease on corn. These fungi produce mycotoxins in South America and Africa, but no mycotoxins have been associated with Diplodia ear rot in the United States and Canada.

❓ What causes tip blight?

👉 Diplodia (formerly Sphaeropsis) tip blight is caused by the fungus Diplodia pinea. It is the most common and severe disease of pines in Pennsylvania and attacks trees of all ages. Tips of infected current-year shoots will blight.

❓ How do you treat phomopsis tip blight?

👉 Highly valued landscape trees and shrubs can also be treated. Timely applications of fungicides containing active ingredients such as mancozeb, thiophanate methyl, chlorothalonil, potassium bicarbonate, propiconazole, benomyl, and copper based products are effective for prevention of Phomopsis tip blight.

❓ How do you keep corn from rotting in your ear?

👉 If Diplodia ear rot is significant, dry grain to below 14 percent moisture and cool to below 50°F as quickly after harvest as possible. Infected grain should be stored at 30°F. Limit storing Diplodia-infected grain to the cold weather season. No Diplodia-infected corn should be held into the following summer.

❓ What causes ear rot in corn?

👉 Fusarium ear rot is an insidious disease of corn caused by the fungus Fusarium verticillioides. The fungus can infect corn seedlings and developing kernels, and grow for a time in the ear without producing disease symptoms. Once symptoms appear, the plants have a stalk rot and/or ear and kernel rot.

❓ What causes phomopsis tip blight?

👉 Phomopsis tip blight is caused by the fungus Phomopsis juniperovora, which survives in diseased branches. Spores of the fungus are produced throughout the growing season, and are spread by wind and rain. Infections can occur whenever new foliage is produced, and moisture or humidity is high.

❓ What is killing my junipers?

👉 Juniper hedge could be dying due to Tip blight if the tree is browning. If the tree is overwatered the Juniper dies due to root rot. A serious Bagworm can kill your Juniper too if left unattended. Infestations of Aphids or Scales can also kill the Juniper.

❓ What is Diplodia tip blight?

👉 Diplodia (formerly Sphaeropsis) tip blight is caused by the fungus Diplodia pinea. It is the most common and severe disease of pines in Pennsylvania and attacks trees of all ages. Tips of infected current-year shoots will blight.

❓ How do you know if a tree is infected with Diplodia?

👉 These structures are the spore-forming fruiting bodies of the fungus from which thousands of spores ooze during wet weather and are splashed throughout the tree. Lower branches on the tree are usually first to be infected. Diplodia persists in the black fruiting structures in dead shoot tips and infected cones that remain on the tree.

❓ Why do Douglas fir trees get Diplodia tip blight?

👉 Douglas-fir and spruces have occasionally been observed with Diplodia tip blight (Figure 5). In most cases, this has been a result of unusual circumstances that have high disease pressure due to adjacent infected pines in windrows or nursery blocks.

❓ What are the symptoms of Diplodia pinea?

👉 Brown, yellow, gray, or straw-colored needles at tip of current season's growth; needles usually stunted and shoot may curl Small, black fruiting bodies on needles, cones, or shoot tissue Diplodia (formerly Sphaeropsis) tip blight is caused by the fungus Diplodia pinea.
